In the present applications a large front projection screen is surrounded by speakers, one on the left, one above or below, for the center channel, and one on the right, and to all of these boxes is added one or two subwoofers. Because the frame for a 120 inch diagonal front projection screen is large, the drivers can also have a very large surface area, actually much larger than nearly all of the audiophile boxes used in home theatre, without adding to the clutter in the already crowded room. The left , and right channels are each reproduced by a line source which is 52 inches by three inches, and therefore has over one hundred and fifty inches of driven surface, equivalent to the true piston area of six eight inch moving coil cone drivers. The center channel is reproduced by two such drivers, one in the top frame section, the other in the bottom frame section, so that the combined output of these two drivers puts the center channel in the true direct center of the FRAME SCREEN. The FRAME SCREEN is also available with a flat panel subwoofer system, which is mounted horizontally just below the front projection surface. The subwoofer drivers, six or eight in all, depending upon the amplitude requirements, are the patented flat panel, cross linked polyimide foam, carbon fibre units, each eight inches or about 20 centimeters in major axis. These aerospace panels are perfectly rigid, yet weigh only eleven grams per square foot. Each can make an excursion of nearly one half inch peak to peak, and each is driven by a magnet motor structure which would normally be associated with three or four professional fifteen inch woofers. In the FRAME SCREEN any choice of reflective screen material is possible, even the brightest, and as no perforations are involved for sound transmission through the material, no light is lost through these perforations.
